I want to let something go.

There are three different moves here and they are not interchangeable.

A cord cutting ends a tie to a specific person, situation or version of yourself. The idea that such a tie is a real thing runs from the Moirai cutting a thread to a red cord burned in Eastern Europe, and the ritual reached its current form in the twentieth century.

A release sets something down without cutting anything — a chapter, a habit, a pattern that keeps coming back around. And calling your energy back is the opposite motion: walking the tie in the other direction to bring home what you left at the far end.

You can name what you are releasing or leave it unnamed. Nobody else sees what you write, and some things are easier to let go of without a label on them.

None of it removes anyone from your thoughts or delivers closure on a schedule. It marks a decision you are making, which is the part that was always yours to make.
